The commercial malt industry in Norway disappeared over 30 years ago. All malt production in the Nordics is now managed primarily through the larger malting houses. There has been a considerable increase in the craft brewing industry in the Nordic countries over the last 10 years, and with this increase, demand for more locally produced ingredients is starting to peak.
Over the past 15 years there has been a considerable amount of government-backed research on the opportunity. Since 2001 research projects have concentrated on looking at the opportunity for returning malt production to Norway.
The Craft Malt Cooperative and Norsk Håndverksmalt are progressively making steps towards realizing this opportunity.
